IPCC Special Report on Climate Change
The most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report was recently approved and released on September 25, 2019. The Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC) “assessed the latest scientific knowledge about the physical science basis and impacts of climate change on ocean, coastal, polar and mountain ecosystems, and the human communities that depend on them.”
To complete the assessment, more than100 leading scientists from more than 30 countries assessed nearly 7000 research studies on climate change. Based on this rigorous assessment, the science is clear and “highlights the urgency of prioritizing timely, ambitious and coordinated action to address unprecedented and enduring changes in the ocean and cryosphere. The report reveals the benefits of ambitious and effective adaptation for sustainable development and, conversely, the escalating costs and risks of delayed action.”
Importantly, the report highlighted how climate change impacts on the ocean and cryosphere impact the health of people around the globe.
